Department History

In 1947 the course “History of Pharmacy and organization of pharmacy network” was included in the curriculum for the master’s degree in the field of pharmacy. In 1951 the course “Organization and history of pharmacy” was included as part of department “Pharmaceutical technologies”. In 1972 the Department became a separate Faculty unit because of the integration of the research group “Pharmacy practice” part of the State Pharmacy Association with the Faculty of Pharmacy, Medical University of Sofia. Heads of the Department since its establishment are Assoc. Prof. Mihail Milev, Prof. Zlatka Dimitrova, D.Sc., Prof. Drumi Bainov D.Sc., Assoc. Prof. Mona Stefanova PhD, and Prof. Guenka Petrova, D.Sc.

The department members are involved in teaching, studying, and developing social, pharmacoeconomic, regulatory, organizational, historical, and practical problems in the field of pharmacy, as well as higher mathematics, statistics, and modeling.

In addition to teaching future pharmacists, members of the academic staff participate in the international master’s program in Health Technology Assessment with Pharmacoeconomics; the programs in Strategic Management of the Pharmaceutical Activity; Management of clinical trials and specialties for Postgraduate education. They are leading experts in Bulgaria and abroad.

The department has an accredited doctoral /Ph.D./ program in Pharmacoeconomics and Pharmaceutical Regulation in the professional field of higher education 7.3 Pharmacy. More than 40 Ph.D. dissertations and 4 Doctor of Science Dissertations have been successfully defended in the department.

  • Pharmacoeconomics – Eighth semester, (Lectures – 30 hours, Practical – 45 hours)
  • Pharmaceutical care – Nine semester, (Lectures – 30 hours, Practical – 45 hours)
