Assoc. Prof. Aleksandar Shkondrov, PhD, graduated from the Faculty of Pharmacy at the Medical University of Sofia in 2012.
Since 2016 he has been an assistant, since 2018 he has been a chief assistant professor, and since 2024 he is an associate professor at the Department of Pharmacognosy.
He defended his doctoral dissertation in pharmacognosy and phytochemistry on “Phytochemical study of species of the genus Astragalus L.”.
He has a speciality in Medicinal Plants and Phytopharmaceuticals, acquired through the postgraduate specialisation at the Medical University of Sofia.
He currently holds the position of Associate Professor at the Department of Pharmacognosy.
He participates in the training on “Pharmacognosy” and “Pharmaceutical Biotechnology” for pharmacy students.
The research work and the contributions of assoc. prof. Aleksandar Shkondrov, PhD, are in the following areas of pharmaceutical science and practice: phytochemistry, chromatography, mass spectrometry, GC-MS, analysis of biologically active substances of natural origin, and pharmacognosy.
He is the author of more than 50 publications, two practical workbooks, and one encyclopaedia for medicinal plants with over 450 citations in journals indexed in Journal Citation Reports by Clarivate, Scopus by Elsevier, Web of Science by Clarivate, and Google Scholar. H-index 12.
He is an expert in phytochemistry and pharmacognosy.
He is a participant in over 20 research projects funded by the Council of Medical Science at the Medical University of Sofia, the National Research Fund at the Bulgarian Ministry of Education and Science, and the European Union.
He is a reviewer of many scientific journals reviewed and indexed by Elsevier’s Scopus and Clarivate’s Web of Science – Phytochemical Analysis, Acta Chromatographica, Molecules, Plants, Phytochemistry Reviews, Pharmacia, Agronomy, International Journal of Molecular Sciences, Toxins, Biotechnology and Biotechnological Equipment, Pharmaceutics, Separations, etc. He won the “Young Phytochemist of the Year” award for 2022 from the Bulgarian Phytochemical Association.
Also, he is a member of some professional organisations and associations: the Bulgarian Pharmaceutical Union, the Bulgarian Scientific Society of Pharmacy, the Bulgarian Phytochemical Association, the Bulgarian Society of Toxicology, Eurotox, Phytochemical Society of Europe, Association for Medical and Aromatic Plants of Southeast European Countries.
