Georgi Stavrakov graduated with honors from the Faculty of Chemistry, University of Plovdiv in 1999. He was an assistant professor from 2000 to 2001 at the Institute of Organic Chemistry, University of Heidelberg, and from 2001 to 2004 at the Faculty of Chemistry and Pharmacy, University of Freiburg, Germany, where he obtained his doctoral degree. After returning to Bulgaria, he began working at the Institute of Organic Chemistry with Centre of Phytochemistry – BAS. In 2009, he joined the Faculty of Pharmacy, Medical University of Sofia, successively holding the positions of assistant professor and associate professor (2016) before becoming a professor in 2025. He is the author of 1 textbook – “Heterocyclic Chemistry” (2024), 1 monograph (2025), student materials and over 40 publications with hundreds of citations.

Georgi Stavrakov’s scientific interests lie in the fields of organic synthesis and medicinal chemistry.

Research projects:

2021-                    BNSF; Tyrosine kinase inhibitors with secondary pharmacophore as a new generation of multitarget antineoplastic agents. Coordinator.

2016-2021          BNSF; Novel acetylcholinesterase inhibitors for treatment of Alzheimer’s disease. Participant (Coordinator: Prof. Dr. Irini Doytchinova).

2009-2013          BNSF; Development of novel anti-tuberculosis agents. Coordinator.

2004-2007          NATO, Reintegration Grant; Design of chiral ferrocenes towards new materials and asymmetric catalysis. Coordinator
