Department History

In 1947, “History of Pharmacy and Pharmacy Management” was added to the pharmacists’ curriculum. By 1951, a dedicated course in drug technology was introduced at the Department of Drug Technology. In 1972, it became an independent department following the integration of the “Pharmacy” research group with the Faculty of Pharmacy at the Medical University of Sofia. The first head was Assoc. Prof. Mihail Milev, succeeded by several notable professors, including Prof. Zlatka Dimitrova and Prof. Konstantin Mitov.

Mission and goals

The goal is to train highly qualified, critically thinking, and adaptable master pharmacists who can analyze and address medical, social, pharmacoeconomic, regulatory, organizational, historical, and practical challenges across all areas of pharmacy.
Throughout their studies, students will gain essential knowledge and practical skills needed to tackle real-world professional cases. The curriculum places a strong emphasis on practical training, utilizing exercises and simulations that reflect actual pharmaceutical practice.

Department Courses

The department teaches, studies, and develops issues related to medical-social, pharmacoeconomic, regulatory, organizational, historical, and practical aspects of pharmacy. It also covers advanced mathematics, statistics, information technology, and modelling, all while staying current with trends in the pharmaceutical industry.

The department offers an accredited PhD program in Pharmacoeconomics and Pharmaceutical Regulation within professional field 7.3 Pharmacy. Over 40 PhD dissertations and 4 Doctor of Science dissertations have been successfully defended in the department.

Teaching and learning activities in the department combine fundamental knowledge and practical training for pharmacy students, postgraduate training for pharmacists and doctoral students in compulsory and elective subjects:

PhD Programs

PhD Program in Pharmacoeconomics and Pharmaceutical Regulation in professional field 7.3 Pharmacy. Over 40 doctoral dissertations and 4 postdoctoral dissertations have been successfully defended at the department.

All courses are taught in Bulgarian and English.

Scientific infrastructure

The department has five modern seminar rooms with free Wi-Fi, a shared workspace, access to statistical data processing programs, and an up-to-date library.

Modern scientific areas developed in the department

The Department of Pharmacy Organization and Economics conducts extensive research aimed at studying and improving pharmaceutical practice, the economic aspects of pharmacy, and the role of the pharmacist in the healthcare system.
